Henry Chadeayne Martin

Henry Chadeayne Martin was born in 1963 and raised in High Point, North Carolina.  Painting is in his blood.  Henry's father, Carroll Martin, introduced Henry to art through the act of abstract painting. The family name Chadeayne (pronounced shÅ-dane) also belongs to the landscape painter Robert Chadeayne, best friends and painting associate of the young Alexander Calder.  Henry is an artist in a family of artists.

At a young age Henry was drawn to the mountains of North Carolina, taking drawing classes by the age of 10.  His drawing instructor, even then, described Henry as "the most talented student I have ever had."  Destiny was calling.  Always loving the outdoors, Henry traveled to Alaska in his early twenties, where he spent his summers camping, painting the mountains and the sea, and working to finance his education.  In 1986 Henry moved to Philadelphia to study at the Pennsylvania Academy, and then continued to graduate magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania.  Impressed by the art of the Spanish masters, such as Velazquez, Sorolla, and Goya, he traveled to Spain after art school. Living in Madrid, Henry spent his time painting the Spanish architecture and landscapes, and making routine pilgrimages to the Prado Museum.  Upon returning to Philadelphia, Henry painted for the Mural Arts Program, began teaching at the local art centers, and started his own regional and international plein air painting workshops

Henry loves teaching. Gifted at articulating his ideas, he wants these ideas accessible to all.  Through a lifetime of painting outdoors, Henry provides unique clarity in his lessons concerning the form and structure of trees, the recession of form into space, and the placement of outdoor elements within the picture plane. Locales such as Manayunk, Wissahickon Park, and bucolic Bucks County serve as destinations for the local workshops; Toledo and Segovia in Spain have provided inspiration abroad.

Few, if any, painters alive equal Henry in attaining depth and space in their canvasses.  "I want my paintings to breathe with a sense of space and light," Mr. Martin says.  For this reason, Henry looks to the Spanish and American Impressionists as a source of inspiration.  Sorrolla, Mir, Lathrop, and Redfield, among others, inform Henry's paintings.  As Robert Chadeayne states, "A great painter is one who can paint the sky."  With Henry, it's in his blood.

Henry continues to travel, paint, write, teach, and produce.  Whether within the canyon lands of the desert southwest; the serene, forested Gaspe Peninsula; or the gentle woodlands of the Appalachian highlands, Henry always finds himself seeking new subject matter, and pushing his range of atmosphere and mood.  "Painting is a dance of color upon the canvass," Henry states.  Within this dance, anything can happen.

Henry currently shows through the F.A.N. Gallery in Philadelphia; Somerville Manning in Delaware, Windy Bush Gallery in New Hope, and other venues.  He works out of his own studio in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia.  His work hangs internationally alongside artists such as Anselm Kiefer, Franz Kline, Kathe Kollwitz, and Thomas Sulley, among others.
